Sally Mann
Deep South
by Bulfinch (Hardcover)
This evocative collection by internationally acclaimed photographer Sally Mann is a masterful reinvention of the art of landscape photography. Sally Mann remains among the most innovative, talked-about, and daring artists working with a camera today. DEEP SOUTH is a much anticipated collection of her exquisite, ethereal landscape photographs, taken in the years since she rose to international fame with her groundbreaking book Immediate Family. The photographs in DEEP SOUTH, many produced with the 19th-century collodion process and a variety of toning techniques, capture what Mann calls the radical light of the American South. Borrowing methods favored by early masters of landscape photography, Mann bends classic craftsmanship to serve the expressive needs of a heightened contemporary sensibility. Serendipitous technical imperfections, such as light leaks or scratches on negatives, echo the accidental, chaotic workings of time. From ghostly images of historic battlefields to ...

Michael Light
100 Suns
by Knopf (Hardcover) (Release Date: 2003-10-21)
Between July 1945 and November 1962 the United States is known to have conducted 216 atmospheric and underwater nuclear tests. After the Limited Test Ban Treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1963, nuclear testing went underground. It became literally invisible—but more frequent: the United States conducted a further 723 underground tests, the last in 1992. 100 Suns documents the era of visible nuclear testing, the atmospheric era, with one hundred photographs drawn by Michael Light from the archives at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the U.S. National Archives in Maryland. It includes previously classified material from the clandestine Lookout Mountain Air Force Station based in Hollywood, whose film directors, cameramen and still photographers were sworn to secrecy. The title, 100 Suns, refers to the response by J.Robert Oppenheimer to the world’s first nuclear explosion in New Mexico when he quoted a passage from the Bhagavad Gita, the classic ...
Naked Happy Girls
by Goliath Books (Hardcover)
The idea of a photographer asking New York women he meets randomly to pose nude for him is not exactly new -- books with similar approaches include Peter Gorman's Naked in Apartment 7, Greg Friedler's Naked New York, and at a stretch, even Richard Kern's New York Girls -- but Andrew Einhorn does the job proficiently. Einhorn is in his late 30s, and according to his biographical paragraph, he lives in Manhattan and works as a photographer, videographer, editor and comedian. The photographs are in black and white, taken in different people's appointments. The women look like they are mostly in their twenties, with a few being slightly older. Each has about 8 or 10 photographs, most about 4" x 6" in size. Einhorn manages to make his models relax and there is often a sense of fun to the pictures. (He also appears naked in the background in a few of the photographs.) Most of the women have tattoos, belly-button rings or nipple piercings. The first woman, Skye, has two ...

Rineke Dijkstra: Portraits
by D.A.P./Schirmer/Mosel (Hardcover) (Release Date: 2005-04-15)
Rineke Dijkstra is renowned for her uncanny and thoughtful portraits series of teenagers and young adults: girls and boys of various nationalities at the beach, children of Bosnian refugees, Spanish bullfighters straight out of the arena, Israeli youngsters before and after military service, and here, documented for the first time, her series of photographs taken of aspiring, young ballet dancers. Her subjects are shown standing, facing the camera, against a minimal background. Formally, the images resemble classical portraiture with their frontally posed figures isolated against minimal backgrounds. Yet, in spite of the uniformity in the photographer's works, there is a marked individuality in each of her subjects. Dijkstra often deals with the development of personality as one moves from adolescence to adulthood, or through a life-changing or potentially threatening experience such as childbirth, or a bullfight. Portraits includes the photographer's new Ballet School series.

The Confused Photographer's Guide to On-Camera Spotmetering (The Confused Photographer's Guide to . . . Series) (The Confused Photographer's Guide to . . . Series)
by Confused Photographer's Guide Books. (Paperback)
World's first book written to illustrate the on-camera spot metering technique for 35mm, Digital, and Medium Format photographers: All types of metering systems used in different cameras (with the exception of the on-camera spotmeter operated by a skilled photographer) use a "cookie-cutter" approach to photographic exposure. What this means is the camera meter measures the various tones of your subject, and then averages all of the tones in order to come up with an overall exposure. Sometimes the overall exposure works and sometimes it doesn't. With this approach, the ball is in the camera's court and in many instances the photographer has no hand in the final look of the image. With on-camera spotmetering, the photographer uses a "tailored" approach to find the correct exposure for a very specific subject. With this approach, the skilled photographer interprets the spotmeter readings from the subject and establishes the correct exposure that captures the desired image (what the ...
